OnePlus 6 to launch in June with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 inside, confirms CEO
In an interview given to CNET, OnePlus CEO Pete Lau has confirmed that the company’s next flagship smartphone will be powered by Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 845 chipset. He also confirmed that the OnePlus 6 will be launched in the second quarter of 2018, which ends on June 30th. The OnePlus 5 was launched on June 20th last year, so it does seem likely that the OnePlus 6 could be unveiled somewhere around mid-June this year.
Lau also confirmed that the company is working on a beta version of the Face Unlock feature for the older OnePlus 3 and 3T smartphones. The Face Unlock feature was introduced in the 5T last year. “There’s no reason to withhold features we can easily implement,” said Carl Pei.
The OnePlus 6 could turn out to be the company’s first flagship to be sold by carriers in the US. When asked about the company’s plans to break into the mainstream in the US smartphone market, Lau said, “If the right opportunity and right timing come along, we’ll be very happy to experiment”. He confirmed that OnePlus would begin talks with leading US carriers this year, so there is a small chance that the OnePlus 6 or perhaps the 6T could be carried by at least one major US carrier by the end of the year.
Finalizing a deal will certainly not be easy though. Huawei, the largest Chinese smartphone vendor failed to seal a deal with AT&T to sell its Mate 10 Pro flagship smartphone recently. The company will now be selling the device via major online retailers such as Amazon as well as its own online store. According to estimates, nearly 90% of consumers in the US purchase their phones through their carrier, making it almost impossible for any company to make a significant impact on the market without having a partnership with major carriers.
